Bohemian Community: Artistic and Charitable Contributions
The Bohemian Club is proud of its record as a contributing citizen and is dedicated to the San Francisco and Monte Rio communities. The Club frequently assists schools, museums, and other community organizations and causes in San Francisco and Sonoma County, directly and through member-supported foundations dedicated to that task. As individuals, members are widely participatory in the leadership and support of countless community health and welfare, cultural, educational, environmental, and social-civic causes. In accordance with its bylaws and traditions, the Club is strictly non-partisan.
We directly support area fire management, the El Molino High School wine program, local providers of food and products in Sonoma County, and provide employment for many year-round construction projects. We are proud of our record for providing opportunity for all our employees, and honored by the large number of temporary staff who return to the Bohemian Grove each summer. In some instances, fathers, sons, daughters, entire families, work together at the Encampment. This speaks volumes about our working relationship with our employees and how much we value the local community members who work with us.
Our support for Monte Rio and western Sonoma County has a long history. For example, 110 years ago Bohemians built the new St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Monte Rio. As part of their fundraising, they held a public variety show in 1911 and have continued to put on the annual Monte Rio Variety Show in July ever since. It was originally performed at the church, but today the annual event is held near the banks of the Russian River at the beautiful Monte Rio Amphitheater, for spectators of all ages. The proceeds benefit Monte Rio Fire Services Foundation, the Monte Rio School Foundation as well as St. Catherine’s church. The event is led and staffed by volunteers from the beneficiaries, who sell the tickets, BBQ, and refreshments.
The show’s tradition is a way for Bohemian Club members camping at the Grove to share their talents and love for Monte Rio. The members who perform include talented amateurs as well as Grammy Award-winning musicians, and entertainment celebrities. TV stars such as Art Linkletter, Merv Griffin, singers Bing Crosby and Phil Harris have starred in past shows as well as other notable stars. For more information: https://monterioshow.wordpress.com/
